Honoring Black Voices Through Books
Posted by Laura M on Feb 23rd 2026
Black History Month is more than a moment on the calendar. It’s an opportunity to slow down, open a book, and invite deeper conversations with our kids.
When we read stories by Black authors and stories that celebrate Black voices, history, joy, and resilience, we’re doing more than reading; we’re helping ensure that all children can see themselves reflected in the stories they read, while also learning to see, listen to, and value experiences beyond their own.
Books help children understand the past, recognize the present, and imagine a more inclusive future. They introduce role models, celebrate culture, and remind kids that history is made by real people with real stories—stories that deserve to be heard all year long.
Reading together during Black History Month creates space for curiosity, empathy, and connection. It gives us language for big questions and opens the door to meaningful conversations at every age.
This month, and always, we’re proud to spotlight books that reflect the richness of Black history and the beauty of Black storytelling, because representation matters, and stories shape the way our children see the world.
Here are a few stories we recommend to celebrate this month with your child:
Black Hair Can- The Roots of Our Roots- Celebrates identity, heritage, and pride, showing kids that culture and history live not just in the past, but in everyday life.
Black Boy, Rise- A lyrical celebration of Black boyhood, heritage, creativity, and resilience, beautifully illustrated and perfect for sharing together as a family
The March for Hope- Reminds children that change often starts with courage, community, and standing up for what’s right.
Curlfriends: New in Town — A middle-grade graphic novel about friendship and being your true self.
